The array of options for nonsurgical fat reduction treatments seems to expand almost every year. CoolSculpting was a pioneer when it received FDA approval in 2010 to reduce fat from “love handles.” It has continued to break ground in the past decade with new applicators that we use for CoolSculpting patients at our med spa in Gilbert, AZ.
Even though CoolSculpting is a leader in the field of non-invasive fat reduction, people weighing their options often ask if the treatment really works.
Can You Really “Freeze” Fat Away?
Absolutely. Clinical studies and patient experience show that CoolSculpting can reduce fat in targeted areas by close to 25%. One question that patients have is how CoolSculpting can destroy fat cells without damaging the skin’s surface or other tissue around the fat.
It works because fat cells start dying before the temperature becomes cold enough to injure the skin. This “fat-freezing” process is called cryolipolysis, which literally means destruction of fat cells by freezing. After the fat cells die, the body gradually flushes them through the lymphatic system.
Does CoolSculpting Work for Everyone?
CoolSculpting treatments are quite successful and have a high rate of satisfaction among patients who are good candidates for the procedure. Women and men who see the best results from CoolSculpting treatments are already in good physical shape but have trouble spots where fat tends to accumulate. These bulges resist diet and exercise and detract from the rest of the patient’s body. People should note that the effects of the treatment only apply to the targeted areas; CoolSculpting is not considered a weight loss procedure.
What Parts of the Body Does CoolSculpting Treat?
Since its introduction in 2010, CoolSculpting has continued to expand the number of areas it can treat. A range of applicators designed specifically to treat certain areas makes CoolSculpting one of the most versatile fat reduction treatments available today.
CoolSculpting can reduce fat in these areas:
- Neck (fat that causes a double chin)
- Upper and lower abdomen
- Outer and inner thighs
- Flanks (“love handles”)
- Hips (“saddlebags”)
- Buttocks (“banana rolls”)
- Lower and upper back (“bra fat”)
Most patients get the best results after 2 treatment sessions. As the fat cells die and are removed from the body, patients see results develop over 3 to 4 months following the procedures.
Will the Fat Ever Come Back?
Destroyed fat cells are gone for good. That doesn’t mean, however, that CoolSculpting patients won’t gain weight in the future, so it’s still important to exercise and follow a healthy diet. The remaining fat cells can enlarge and obscure the results produced by CoolSculpting. For patients who lead active, healthy lives, the results are long-lasting.
