Is Buttock Augmentation the Next Big Trend?

It’s official, larger buttocks are in style and according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2014 statistics report 11,500 Brazilian Butt Lifts (up 15%) and 1800 Buttock Implant procedures were performed. The number of buttock augmentations with implants doubled from 2013 to 2014. With curvy figures such as Jennifer Lopez and the Kardashians in the media, more and more patients are wanting more curves and of course, larger buttocks.

A Brazilian Butt Lift is a procedure performed by plastic surgeons which involves liposuction using a special technique to minimize trauma to the fat cells that are removed. Then, after straining the fluid and mixing the fat with antibiotic solution the fat is inserted via special cannulas into ones buttocks. This not only adds size but can also give a better shape to someone’s backside.

Following my plastic surgery residency I had the opportunity to travel to Brazil for additional training at the Pitanguy Clinic and under Louiz Hiraldo Periero, a world-renowned expert in buttock augmentation. Many plastic surgeons in America are skeptical of buttock augmentation because of known complications with implant placement. While in Brazil I learned various techniques with the Brazilian butt lift and implant based buttock augmentation and feel much more comfortable with the safety of these procedures if performed correctly.

Buttock Implants or Brazilian Butt lift?

When patients ask which method I prefer, I believe it depends on the patients wishes, body frame, fat content and overall health. While implants may be great for one patient, liposuction and fat grafting (Brazilian butt lift) may be much better for another. Importantly, you must have an open honest discussion with your plastic surgeon about your ideal image and what you are hoping to achieve. If your plastic surgeon thinks the ideal body is one shape and you prefer something different, both of you may walk away disappointed.

In general a thinner, fit woman who has little body fat and wants to stay active but wants a fuller figure would do best with implant augmentation. Many women have fat in just the wrong areas and using specific suction techniques with placing the fat carefully in various anatomic points for better buttock projection we can improve body contour on multiple levels. Recently I have been using implants while also performing liposuction to contour the hips and then placing fat as well to add additional volume and shape. Each patient must be looked at individually and only then can we narrow the procedures down to what best fits your needs and help you make an informed, realistic understanding of possible outcomes.
