The cost of an initial breast augmentation procedure (not revision surgery) at our practice depends on several factors. The type of implant influences the final cost: Saline implants are less expensive than silicone gel implants. Anatomically shaped implants (“gummy bears”) cost more than round silicone gel implants.
During your consultation, Dr. Olson or Dr. Marks provides you with a written quote that reflects the specifics of your surgery. The consultation fee for first-time breast patients is only $100; it is $250 for returning patients. If the patient decides to move forward with their procedure, the consultation fee will be applied to the surgical fee.
When it comes to your surgeon, it’s important that your choice be based on more than the cost. Women searching for a breast augmentation specialist in the Phoenix area choose to drive to Gilbert to have a plastic surgeon with Dr. Olson and Dr. Marks’ training and experience perform the procedure.
It’s common for women to feel insecure about the shape or size of their breasts. If genetics aren’t to blame, pregnancy, nursing, weight fluctuations, and menopause can detract from the size and shape of your breasts. Most women simply wish to restore or enhance the symmetry of their body contours with fuller yet natural-looking breasts. Our patients typically want to:
Many women undergo breast augmentation as part of a mommy makeover, in which Dr. Olson and Dr. Marks combine procedures for the breasts and body to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy figure.

Fortunately, our patients have the advantage of skilled plastic surgeons to guide them. Dr. Olson, Dr. Marks, and our staff respect your confidentiality and personal decisions. They provide a private, comfortable setting in which you can feel confident about discussing your goals and concerns regarding breast enlargement.
Remember, every woman is unique, so one option is not necessarily better than another. Your plastic surgeon will help you select the best solutions for your body type, your lifestyle, and your goals.
Breast augmentation enhances the volume and shape of the breasts. It cannot address sagging (and may make it more pronounced with the added weight of the implants). A breast lift, meanwhile, elevates the breasts’ position and removes excess skin, but it cannot increase the size.
If you are happy with the size of your breasts but want to raise them to a more youthful placement, a breast lift may be right for you. Conversely, if you want a more rounded shape and greater volume, breast augmentation is the better choice.
A combined breast augmentation with lift (or augmentation mastopexy, in clinical terms) can offer the greatest cosmetic enhancements by improving the shape, size, and positioning of the breasts.
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours to perform. Once you are asleep, your surgeon creates a pocket for the implant either behind the breast tissue and in front of the chest muscle (subglandular placement) or behind the muscle (submuscular placement). Saline implants are inserted empty and filled once in place. Silicone implants come pre-filled. Once the implants are in place, Dr. Olson or Dr. Marks checks them for symmetry and accurate size before closing the incisions.
Placing the implants under the muscle provides the most natural-looking results for most patients. Each option has its own advantages, which include:
Subglandular: This is a suitable choice for those who already have adequate breast tissue. Patients who have subglandular placement generally experience less discomfort during recovery than patients who have submuscular implants.
Submuscular: There are several benefits to placing the implants behind the chest muscle:

Meet Dr. Olson Meet Dr. MarksThe “best” incision varies between breast augmentation patients depending on their anatomy, choice of implants, and personal preferences. Dr. Olson and Dr. Marks use 3 types of incisions to perform breast augmentation. They inform patients about the benefits and drawbacks of each before they make a decision.
Inframammary fold (IMF): This small horizontal incision goes just above or within the crease where your breast skin connects to your chest. With this approach, a surgeon can clearly see all the tissues as he creates a pocket where the implant will go. This is the most common incision and offers consistent results regardless of the implant size or material. Scars are concealed beneath the breasts and under clothing and swimwear.
Periareolar: This incision goes on the outer border of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. Any scar is often hidden by the darker skin of the areola. This approach may be recommended if you are combining a breast lift with implants. A periareolar incision is typically not an option for women with very small areolae.
Transaxillary: This incision goes in the armpit, so there is no scarring on the breast itself. Our plastic surgeons use a small endoscope to create a pocket and place the implant with precision. This incision is better suited for saline implants because they aren’t filled until after they are placed. It can be difficult to squeeze a silicone implant into place from this incision site.
Dr. Olson and Dr. Marks often perform breast augmentation in conjunction with breast lift surgery, or mastopexy. This is a great option for patients who wish to improve the position as well as the size of their breasts. A breast lift raises the breasts to a perkier, more youthful-looking placement. Additionally, many patients choose to undergo liposuction and tummy tuck surgery at the same time as breast augmentation. Such a combined procedure is called a mommy makeover, and it can be customized with options to address your specific areas of concern. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon helps you decide which procedures are appropriate for you.
You can help ensure your operation goes smoothly and reduce the chances of complications after surgery by following the preoperative instructions provided by our plastic surgeons. Our team gives you specific details about preparing for breast augmentation, but there are some general guidelines that all cosmetic surgery patients should follow. Those instructions include:
Our patients often find that recovery after breast augmentation is quite simple. Still, there are a number of things you should do prior to your surgery to make the process as comfortable and convenient as possible.
Depending on certain details of your surgery, such as whether your breast implants are placed above or below the muscle, your recovery will vary slightly. All patients should make sure they have a partner or friend who can stay with them for at least the first couple of days following surgery. You should also take the following preparation steps:
The initial recovery period for breast augmentation is 2 weeks, though your results will continue to improve as swelling subsides and your implants soften and settle into a more natural position (a process called “drop and fluff”). Some other factors to consider during your recovery include:
Final results develop over the course of 3 to 4 months as swelling subsides and the implants “settle” into a natural shape and position.
There is no “typical” breast augmentation patient. Our patients come mostly from nearby communities, but also from far beyond. The procedure is popular with women of all ages, from college students to retirees. Although they all wish for larger, fuller breasts, their stories are different. Some wish to replace the volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding, while others have naturally small breasts as the result of heredity.
When evaluating a prospective patient for breast augmentation, Dr. Olson and Dr. Marks consider the overall health of the patient, as well as her goals and expectations.
The initial consultation is a private, unrushed appointment where you may learn more about your plastic surgeon and their approach to breast augmentation. During your consultation, Dr. Olson or Dr. Marks ask you many questions about your lifestyle and health history. They also perform a physical examination to help determine the ideal surgical technique for your body. Your surgeon explains the implant options available to you and addresses each of your questions and concerns. If you decide to proceed with surgery, we provide you instructions for preparing for breast augmentation, and we book follow-up appointments and your surgery date.
Many women are happy to learn that having breast implants doesn’t automatically disqualify them from breastfeeding in the future. By using incisions that don’t involve the nipple, such as the inframammary or transaxillary (armpit) incisions, our plastic surgeons can increase your odds of successful breastfeeding. If you’d like to breastfeed in the future, talk to Dr. Olson or Dr. Marks during your consultation. They can work with you to develop a surgical plan that matches your lifestyle.
Routine MRIs are not mandatory for women with silicone breast implants, but they are recommended. Because today’s silicone implants don’t lose their shape if they break, an MRI is the only way to check for damage. Currently, the FDA recommends an MRI 3 years after breast augmentation with silicone implants, then once every 2 years thereafter. However, the ultimate decision on how often to undergo MRI scans is up to you.
While breast implants don’t last forever, today’s implants last much longer than in the past. Over time, breast implants eventually weaken and become more prone to breakage. Their shape may change, as well. This process usually takes more than a decade. Once you and your plastic surgeon determine your implants are no longer useful, you may choose to undergo revisionary surgery with new implants or have them removed altogether, a procedure called explant surgery.
Dr. Olson and Dr. Marks will create beautiful results based on your aesthetic preferences, from subtle enhancement to dramatic results. That being said, silicone gel implants tend to more closely resemble the look and feel of natural breasts. Your plastic surgeon will work with you to determine which implants will give you your desired results.
While implant options are a personal choice, many women tend to prefer silicone gel implants for the more natural-looking results they can achieve. Silicone gel implants are less likely to wrinkle at the edges, but they require long-term monitoring for leaks and ruptures.
Some patients prefer saline implants due to the smaller, more discreet incisions required and the harmless, biocompatible nature of the filling.
Like any type of surgery, there is always a small degree of risk involved. However, in the hands of a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Olson or Dr. Marks, you can be assured that your procedure will uphold the highest standards for safety and quality.
